The Countdown Continues…

March 14, 2016

It’s Part 2 of Cat-Tales’ Anniversary Countdown. To celebrate our 15th, we asked readers to submit their favorite moments from the 70+ stories.  How did your favorites fare?

March 28, 2014

Respect Your Cat Day is with us once more.  You may dismiss Valentine’s Day as a manufactured holiday.  You may speak slightingly of St. Paddy’s (but not in front of Matches Malone if you value your teeth).  You may even blow off Twitter’s #NationalCleavageDay.  But no fan of Cat-Tales would dare let March 28 pass without pausing to acknowledge the feline.

Selina Kyle's Cats-Whiskers and Nutmeg

Selina’s Cats Whiskers and Nutmeg were introduced very briefly in Cat-Tales: Normal and quickly learned to steal every scene they appeared in. By the time they moved into Wayne Manor in Splitzville, it was their series. They have quite a fan base, and the story of how Selina came to own them was the subject of an Ask Catwoman question last year.

Whiskers Manifesto - Words of Wisdom from Catwoman's Cat

In String Theory, Jason Blood came to the manor and, able to speak the lost tongue by which the priests of ancient Egypt spoke with divine and mortal cats, he is told Whiskers design for living – as well as his opinion on a few other things.

I tried. Nobody can say I didn’t try.

Selina’s preserve is called The Catitat.  It was also introduced in Cat-Tales Normal, where readers came to know her favorite pet, the ocelot Nirvana, who is named for the resident of a preserve in Florida.  Readers would later come to meet Shimbala the tiger (named for Tippi Hedren’s Shambala Preserve) and get a tour of the cabin (and meet the caracals Myk and Brii) through Alfred Pennyworth’s eyes in Polishing Silver.  Superman got involved when some tigers from the Dhumavati Death Maze needed a home in The New Black, and now that there’s a litter of tiger cubs, he’s, well, you’ll have to read NMK Inc to find out.

The Hour of Second Napping

July 30, 2013

A few weeks ago there was a Gutters that showed a Justice League parody, killing The Grumpy Cat with the caption “I don’t think DC Comics understands how the Internet works.”

I do. Whenever I’m asked about the most popular original characters in Cat-Tales, I have to answer twice.  Humans like Sly, Raven and the ex-henchman outfit known as The Z all deserve recognition, but the fact is, when it comes to fan favorites, no “two-foot” in the storyverse can hold a candle to Selina’s cats Whiskers & Nutmeg.  The little furballs have a fan base, and not long ago, it mobilized lobbying to get them more screen time.

whiskers-and-nutmeg-fanbaseNever let it be said that Cat-Tales doesn’t respond to its most invested readers (even if those readers don’t technically read but arrange to have the stories read to them).  Harking back to a time when mainstream comics also wanted to please readers, I grabbed the old “Because you demanded it” tag and put together an old school cover for The Hour of Second Napping, revisiting events from Cat-Tales: Inside an Enigma from the a POV within Wayne Manor and, uh, below the doorknobs.

The Hour of Second Napping – A Cat-Tales Extra Starring Whiskers & Nutmeg

Theatre fans among you may recognize this as the narrative model from Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, but I figured if I acknowledged that by calling it something like “Whiskers & Nutmeg Are Dead,” it might be misconstrued and our Feline Overlords might just shut down the Internet until the misunderstanding was straightened out.

National Hairball Awareness Day (Gallery Spotlight: Whiskers & Nutmeg)

April 26, 2013

Nothing makes you question the time you spend on social media like logging in to Twitter and learning it is National Hairball Awareness Day.  But hey, I’m the one who opted to go into the glamorous world of Catwoman fan fiction and I’m the one who let these two onto the page without stopping to consider that it’s the internet and cats rule.  They’re the most popular original characters in the series, and I have to keep the real stars of Cat-Tales happy, so…

Whiskers and Nutmeg want to know who’s not wearing the ribbon and why.

To commemorate this important day, I thought we’d do a Gallery Spotlight of those pictures featuring the little pests darlings.

Probably the sexiest Catwoman in the gallery that doesn’t include Bruce or Batman, and I’m spotlighting it for the cats!
