Happy Heist Day: The Cutest but Least Convenient Bat/Cat fight ever.

March 18, 2015

There are days when it’s ten kinds of awesome having a fully-characterized, three-dimensional, complex and nuanced Batman characters in your head. Then there are days like this, when I’m sipping morning coffee—innocently sipping morning coffee—and happen to hear that it’s the 25th Anniversary of the Gardner Museum heist.

I ignore this for a while, thinking it warrants no more than a link on the Cat-Tales facebook page, reminding readers how Selina taunted Bruce with information about the famous robbery in order to get him to come to bed in The Gotham Rogues, and a short while later, the FBI did in fact report a break in the case, anticipating recovery the art. Ha!

That was my plan… but then inner Selina starts campaigning to make it Heist Day, an international Cat Burglar Holiday, and I should call for everyone to wish her a happy one and post pictures, etc. etc. After all, half a billion dollars worth of art taken including three Rembrandts, a Vermeer, a Manet and sketches by Degas, THAT’s an anniversary the community celebrates.

Then Inner Bruce pipes up, reminding me that the heist inspired Senator Edward Kennedy to make the stealing of major art works from a museum a federal crime, increasing the statute of limitations to 20 years. Hardly something for criminals to take pleasure in, but a giant step forward for law enforcement.

The two of them have been bickering about it ever since, and it would be adorable except I’m trying to get stuff done.

Grumble.

Don’t blame me when The Neighborhood: Chapter 4 is late.  Blame them.

The Femme Fatale has arrived

February 5, 2015
Selina Kyle as Gina O'Malley

Selina Kyle is Gina O’Malley, femme fatale to Batman’s Matches Malone gone deep undercover with the Irish Mob in Cat-Tales: The Neighborhood

‘Got a match?’ Matches Malone inhaled, his eyes lingering just long enough on a delicately suntanned ankle to be tempted upward… The Femme Fatale has arrived in The Neighborhood- Chapter 2: Sitrep.  On the Cat-Tales website and mobile-friendly mirror Cat-Tales.mobi.

Fools and Drama Queens, As Wrong About Gotham as They Are About Selina…

September 29, 2014

Those not expecting to buy a bridge in Gotham tonight are invited to peruse a Catwoman origin worthy of the character and meet a Selina Kyle with the class and background to make her Batman and Bruce Wayne’s equal.

“Characters come alive, and when you’ve read them, you’ll never read Batman the same way again… and you’ll understand that the comics (and movies) truly do have Catwoman all wrong.”

“Short few paragraphs brilliatly illustrate why this Catwoman is the real one and the rest are cheap imitations. She’s brilliant, ferocious, is not afraid of anyone, but is sharp enough to accurately assess everyone, including Batman, and handle them accordingly.”

“I’ve rarely come across an author that is capable of consistently delivering such pathos and insight into characters and through the lens of the minds eye, insight into ourselves.”

Yes, Cat-Tales fans, I was going to save this announcement but Cattitude will be the next audio book read by Caroline Sharp and when you hear this sample, you will see (hear) why I couldn’t wait to share.

Selina is Going Back to the Batcave and this time You Pick the Wallpaper

May 19, 2014

Several weeks ago I introduced a fun little picture for the scenes gallery called Coming to Bed Or Not?  inspired by a scene – or actually several different scenes – in various Cat-Tales.  What I learned from that little adventure is that the prospect of Selina in the Batcave is tremendously popular with many of you.  Also that you want wallpaper sizes and dimensions whether I think a picture’s PITA hologram is too grainy for HD or not.  Ok, message received.    More Selina in the cave.

To make it up to you, I’m going to let you decide what the next wallpaper will be.   I selected three stories that had Selina in the cave in a unique context, each with their own distinct flavor.  Identity Element, where she is researching the Justice League security system after the Dibny murder, Blueprints where the cave and its many secrets plays an important role in the search for some gold bars (and the reason for the search) and Not My Kink, where she’s taking over nightly patrols while Bruce recovers from an injury, even though it’s the dreaded C-word.

Not My Kink had the most diversity of tone, so the sample images are all inspired by that, but I’ve left open the option to write in suggestions from the other two.

Batcave Tech

May 5, 2014

Curious about those Data Wells in the Batcave?

The first one appeared, hexagonal, appeared in Chapter 1 of Inside an Enigma while Bruce was mulling over the Diamond Heist puzzle and again when Selina was making her plans for Riddler and Doris.  Some saw a similarity to the forensic investigation in Hush, but the truth is, the new toy wasn’t inspired by any comic book but by Tony Stark’s playroom  in the movies.  (Say what you want about Mr. Stark, he’s a billionaire with a knack for eye candy tech toys.)

Selina Kyle in the Batcave: Original Hexagonal Data Well from Inside an Enigma

Selina had a bit of Batcave-inspired tech in her new Cat Lair too, what Doris likened to an NSA Tech Bunker as pictured in movies and television. It had nothing to do with the data well, but was based on the configuration of Workstation One (Batman’s).

Finally, in the new story Spontaneous Generation, Selina has been tinkering with the data well, reconfiguring the screens to be less claustrophobic. It caused a little buzz among readers, leading to these pictures.

Catwoman: Corporate Intervention

April 6, 2014
Lichtenstein-style Catwoman says "If corporations are people, we're looking at the DC Comics thing all wrong."

If corporations are people…

This is the third in a series of images in the style of Roy Lichtenstein, simulating a comic book look through those famous dots, and presenting a thought that – well, let’s just say the text and thought bubbles in Lichtenstein’s works generally presented something too complex to be boiled down to the four-color medium.   The first two in this series, ‘Lichtensteined’ the Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul from Batman Begins and Christian Bale as The Dark Knight with the most appropriate lines from each of those films.
