Keep smiling. It pisses off all the right people.

March 4, 2013

There is an attitude out there, best summed up by a friend of mine:

…the ones who believe Batman is the ultimate incarnation of badassery… who think in the Urban Dictionary next to “Bad ass” there is a picture of Batman… think Batman eats broken glass for breakfast and shits Chuck Norrises.  (Yes, plural.)  Who believe in their hearts and souls that the only reason Batman doesn’t kill is so his enemies can cry into their pillows each night from the knowledge that they will never be as badass as Batman….

But that attitude is not what’s really wrong with the fandom.  The true tragedy are the ones who don’t believe any of that but think it’s necessary for a successful product, who think a portrayal lacking that cynicism masquerading as realism is doomed to fail.  To those poor Faustian bastards I gleefully report that in a year I have spent posting a ludicrous amount of Batman-related material, related to Arkham City, to The Dark Knight Rises, The New 52, and selections old and new from the Cat-Tales fan gallery, the most liked, reblogged and retumbled were these two…

and this bit of lighthearted silliness from Comics Worth Reading.

Valentine’s Day protocol gone horribly, horribly wrong

Any questions?

You know, in 4 days Cat-Tales is going to celebrate it’s 12th anniversary.  That’s 12 years of readers, 12 years of stories – some of which actually inspired some of those readers to write and draw for this storyverse, this vision of the characters specifically.

Maybe, just maybe, it’s time for those who imprinted on the dystopian nihilism of the 1980s to consider the possibility that what seemed like the alpha and omega then was not a great and lasting vision.  That it is failing to withstand the test of time.  That there are a lot of people out here who, so far from insisting on that grim & gritty ugliness, actually find it a turnoff and a deterrent to buying the product.

Maybe, as we said at my old theatre, it’s time to remember that there are two masks, and only one of them is crying.

Bruce and Selina

August 1, 2012

Time for some reader input on a subject near and dear to your hearts.

The Bruce and Selina pairing is the heart and soul of Cat-TalesIf you’ve been to the Cat-Tales story page recently and you were there to read anything other than The Gotham Rogues, you’ll have noticed you had to scroll down to get to the tales in chronological order.  The top half of the page was taken up by a lot of “Best of” lists:  Best Comedies, Best Joker Tale, Best Original Story, Best Story based on a Comic arc, etc.   It was done because the buildup to The Dark Knight Rises was bringing so many newcomers to the site.  I wanted a way to help them get oriented without bogging down in years of comic-book references, in-jokes and tropes that they didn’t know and didn’t care about.

It turned out to be very popular, and I’ve decided to keep it once the wave of new activity subsides.  I am moving it to a separate page, however, which leaves room for a new category: “Best Bruce and Selina”

I know, it sounds incredibly obvious.  The reason I didn’t have it to begin with is that the whole series is Bruce and Selina.  They are the heart and soul of Cat-Tales – with the ironic result that it’s very hard to recommend a particular tale about them.  Most of what I consider their best moments are nestled inside stories that are superficially about something else.

So I – and they – need your help.

Please comment on Facebook or in the forums, or PM me with your picks.  And if it’s one of those jewel scenes that it is buried in another story which doesn’t exactly scream Bat/Cat romance,  then please unpack it a little and tell me why this moment/scene/story is your pick. Help me figure out how to present this so the people searching for this material can easily find it.

The Gotham Post

News, as it breaks, delivered straight to you.

Cat-Tales readers might not be the biggest fan of Gotham City’s largest and most widely-read newspaper, but they do get a few things right from time to time, and it’s definitely worth perusing now and then to keep up with the news.

Texts from Catwoman

Texts from Catwoman

Followers of this blog have probably seen the new TV Spots for The Dark Knight Rises by now.  I decided to have a little fun with the fact that Selina seems to be stealing Bruce’s Lamborghini, which not only dovetails into all the fun I’ve had with a certain purple Lambo in Cat-Tales since it was introduced in Short Tales(has it really been that long?  Yes, yes it has), it was also a reason to dust off and re-trumpet last month’s Texts from Catwoman fun.

Remember this one?  So did I, but when I went looking for it, I discovered something intriguing as I scrolled down the page.

Texts from Catwoman

April 13, 2012

If anyone hasn’t seen or heard about the Texts from Hillary Tumblr I can only assume your internet is out, your dog ate your phone, you have no friends, and you don’t watch the news. If anyone doesn’t know a bunch of new pics came out from The Dark Knight Rises, there’s really nothing this blog can do for you. For everyone else, behold the parody that simply had to happen…

Oh Photoshop, is there nothing you can’t do?

April 11, 2012

So, my good friends over at Gotham Trending were the first to post this semi-yummy new promo pic of The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman.  the-dark-knight-rises-catwoman

Unlike last year’s set photos, this is a “Promo Pic,” a provocative pose, nice lighting on the tush, lots of detail on the costume, and as they pointed out over at GT, it seems intended for all of us to get busy making up our own artwork.

Rather than simply plop it against a Gotham backdrop, I decided… Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  Last year, while Anne Hathaway’s stunt double was on a motorcycle playing chicken with an IMAX camera that should have known better, some of us who weren’t wincing for the poor camera man noticed she was wearing the Jim Balent thigh boots.  Since we see now that she’s got the long gloves to match, there really was just one thing missing to make her a proper Catwoman fit to make The Dark Knight, er, rise.
